As an additional element of its environmental sustainability program, Sarens Nuclear and Industrial Services adopted a local highway near its Hartford, Wisconsin facility. In conjunction with global Earth Day events, 14 employees from six departments gathered to preserve the roadside resulting in nine bags of garbage and other debris being cleared. While keeping safety as an ever-vital priority, the team sported Sarens high-visibility vests as they cleaned the 1 mile (1.6 km) section of roadside.

The Adopt-a-Highway program started in Texas in the 1980’s and quickly gained popularity as a successful and simple method for organizations to be good stewards for their local community. Numerous other states and provinces in the United States and other nations began their own variation of the program, including Wisconsin in 1991. As part of the 2023 Year Action Plan for the Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) department, SHEQ Manager Nick Skerven led the adoption program for Sarens as an opportunity to give back to the general Hartford area.

The section of road is of significant impact to the area as it is part of multiple homes, farms, and a school. Numerous types of wildlife also inhabit and pass through the region including deer, turkey, and waterfowl.

“Having a chance to maintain the natural beauty of the area we live and work in is always something that we take pride in,” says SHEQ Manager Nick Skerven. “Not only do we get to be able to have an afternoon out of the office and enjoy the camaraderie of one other, but Sarens can continue our passion of caring for and enjoying the great outdoors.”
